Evolution 3

Description and Reviews

3 way loudspeaker system using 2 drivers

Thanks to the length of its triangular transmission line, the perfect optimization of its continuously increasing section, and the progressive coupling of its event port with the outside air, Evolution 3 is able to reproduce 35 Hz at –3dB.
In addition, the double woofer surround perfectly guides the moving coil in the air gap of a double magnet system without swing phenomena and ensures that the damping increases in proportion to the amplitude of displacements of the cone, guaranteeing excellent power handling capacity and a perfect mechanical damping to the moving coil.
As a result of the very favorable relationship between the diameter and the weight of the woofer cone, transient response is excellent and the establishment of the waves train is very fast, which produces the vibrant, living sound.
The ogival tweeter with annular compression chamber is unbaffled, and is endowed of a remarkable delicate and uniform directivity, resulting in an extremely smooth treble response with a complete lack of listening fatigue.
Although the Evolution 3 is insensitive to its immediate environment, is very easy to drive, and does not require high-end amplification, it deserves to be associated with uper mid-fi and high end equipment, considering its high level of musical performance.

EQUIPMENT

BASS/MEDIUM

6.7 woofer , pure aerogel cone material treated with viscoelastic resins; vented dust cap with tuned rear cavity; double edge-wound copper coil mounted onto a fiberglass reinforced kapton voice coil former for a perfect padding of the air gap; double magnet field plates forged and treated by deposit of zinc for a very good temperature conductivity and an excellent symmetry of the magnetic field, double peripheral surround, vented spider, Zamac basket, gold plated connectors.

TWEETER

1.1 polyamide tweeter ; anti-vortex phase plug with optimized profile uncoupled from the magnetic core, surround compression chamber controlling the amplitude of the peripheral cone displacements; double magnet system and ferrofluided air gap for perfect temperature conductivity and optimized damping of the moving coil.
Mechanical filtering of vibrations through the use of a floating installation in the head support, machined in solid beech with a geometry designed to obtain a signal without secondary directional lobes.

CROSSOVER

6 and 12 dB/Octave configuration of serial type. Crossover frequencies at 100 and 3900 Hz. Selected components with low tolerances, pure deoxygenated copper hand wound air coils, polypropylene capacitors.

LOUDSPEAKER CABINET

Tuned triangular transmission line, event port is progressively coupled with the external air, permitting dissipation of system overvoltages at a frequency that suppresses the effects of classic direct radiation event ports.
Solid beech battens machined to 0.75" thickness whose heterogeneous structure generates only small resonance's; assembly under press guarantees a completely inert structure; rounded edges limit diffraction effects; steel spikes.

« LE MONDE DE LA MUSIQUE » january1999 - Ph Venturini

« Shock » Monde de la Musique

To say that the evolution 3 reminds us of the «  Offrande « , our reference loudspeaker, also designed by Jean-Marie Reynaud, is very meaningful : this speaker is indeed one of the greatest achievements of this manufacturer. The evolution 3 shares with the «  Offrande «  a distinguished way to let the sound float in an ocean of light. We don't mean that the sound is disembodied or merely ethereal. On the contrary, the foundations of the music are remarkable stable and powerful (the bass is magnificent, full and lithe at the same time). But, above all, we are charmed by the Evolution's way to free the music of all electronic constraints. Sounds seem to gush forth from an invisible orchestra. Those accustomed to the concert hall will marvel at the magic of the sound : its emission, its expansion, its extinction. Absolutly transparent, the Evolution 3 doesn't conceal any detail so that it can, paradoxically, disappear behind the music. Though the Evolution 3 perfectly translates the inspiration of the musicians, in its subtlest nuances, this speaker has nothing of a surgical device that would dissect the music : blood, flesh and muscles are on the contrary preserved ! The stuff «  between the notes « , this impalpable thing that generates the emotion of the music, becomes magically audible. The Evolution 3 owes these stupefying qualities to its perfect tonal balance, absolutely linear, and to its outstanding dynamic capacities. The slighest inflexions of the musical gesture, the smallest variations of the bow on the strings or the vibrato of a human voice are translated with an uncanny realism. The astouding tranparency of this speaker allows the listener to instantly distinguish bad recordinds from good ones. When switching from a CD to another, differences are easily perceived.

You'll hear music instead of hearing speakers. With a first-class recordind, emotion is nearly paroxysmic. Easy to drive, this speaker deserves of course state-of-the-art electronics, as respectful as it is of the music. The Evolution 3 enriches the prestigious range of Jean-Marie Reynaud's products. There is little doubt it will delight the most demanding music lovers.

Strengths : an incredibly natural sound

Weaknesses : none

« NOUVELLE REVUE DU SON » October 1998 J.Hiraga R.Lacrampe

Jean Hiraga : Jean-Marie Reynaud is known for improving all over again models that were already several times upgraded. In the case of the Evolution 3, which we first rewieved in April 96, we noticed an obvious improvement concerning the frequency range response, the linearity (checked by listening and measurements), the registers coherency, the very refined and chiseled treble. Above these technical considerations, we also appreciated the faithful timbres of this speaker that sounds despite its size like a much bigger one, even in the bass register.

Robert Lacrampe : Jean-Marie Reynaud has a particular place in the heart of audiophiles. We have no choice but to say his products offer, with astonishing constancy, sonic qualities that distinguish them from their competitors. For Jean-Marie Reynaud, the ear must not yield in front of measurements. That's why this speaker sound so right. That's why its low end is so unbelievably powerful, without no emphasis of any kind. Its naturalness could make speakers with bigger drivers and enclosure, but badly designed, blush with shame. The stereophonic image seems to be larger than deeper, but has a truly holographic precision. Bravo !

TECHNICAL EVALUATION : Dynamic = 9.5/10 Definition = 9.5/10 Stereophonic
